Indore is the industrial capital of Madhya Pradesh. With
a long and chequered history, Indore has been a major Indian city right
from the pre-independence days. Once the seat of the great Holkar dynasty,
Indore has had the advantage of being centrally located in the country,
such that most places in central, western and north India are within
reasonable reach. Added to this, the resource richness of the central
Indian lands made Indore fertile ground for industrialization.
Indore has had a heady blend of old and new, with the

In the last decade, Pithampur, Indore and Dewas have
performed as a dynamic industrial zone of Madhya Pradesh. Pithampur a well
developed industrial area of about 20 kms. '' It has 107 large and medium
and 1480 small scale industries. A large number of National and
international repute companies are functioning in this area. Major
automobile giants are Mitshubishi-Eicher, Kinetic Honda, Bajaj Tempo,
Hindustan Motors and Larsen and Toubro 100%E.O.U. and other large
industries in field of yarn manufacturing have grown very fast Indo Rama
Syntex Ltd., Parasrampuria International Ltd. Girnar Fibers have grown very
fast. Indo Rama Syntex Ltd., Parasrampuria International Ltd. Girnar Fibers
Ltd., Jaideep Glass Works Ltd. Are already working while Ganpati Exports
Ltd. Is under the process of putting up their Rs. 350 crores plant. The
existing yarn units are continuously expanding their capacities. STI has
also entered as a big unit recently. Besides this, approximate. Investment
in textile sector is to be tuned 1000 crores. Pithampur Industrial
chemicals, mini cement plants, mini steel plants, solvent extraction, soap
and detergents, food processing, packaging and various support base
industries. Apart from this, a Gem and Jewelry Park has also been proposed
by our state Government where International giants will be setting up their
units along with Indian counterparts to enrich the national economy.
In a new growth center Kheda huge investment has been
proposed by big group of Industries like Bridgestone India. Some of them
have even started building their plants. A large number of small scale
engineering ancillaries, need based enterprises are also working in this
prestigious industrial area. Globalization and liberalization policies of
the Center and industrial policy of State government announced in 1994 have
opened new potentials of industrialization in each and every block (Taluka).
M.P Audhyogik Vikas Nigam Ltd., Indore has taken various prestigious
projects of infrastructure development in and around Indore of which
Electronic Complex, Ready Garments Complex, Software Complex etc. are some
of the major ones. Indore is also known in the map of Asia as one of the
largest producer of Pharmaceuticals like basic and bulk drugs formulations,
tabulating, capsulling etc. There are more than 1000 small and big
Pharmaceutical units like Syncom formulations pvt. ltd. located in and
around Indore.
Dewas, which is about 32 Kms far from Indore is also a
well developed industrial area, having 53 large and medium and 5145 small
scale industries. Various Iron & steel foundries, leather industries,
engineering and textile units are working in this area have gained a good
name in the Industrial World. Steel Tubes of India Ltd., TATA Exports,
Gajra Gears, S. Kumar's are some of the names which are well known. Indore
has its own industrial area where a big number of large and medium and
small scale industries are located. These are.--

Indore is known for its leather toys, and Maheshwar and Chanderi have some
very interesting ornate sarees and brocades to offer. There is a lot of
sari work coming out of Madhya Pradesh, and the Maheshwari sarees have
particularly gained in popularity of late. Besides the fabrics, there is a
variety of local carving crafts to choose from.
